Personal Hearing Devices

If you have hearing needs, you are not alone. According to the Hearing Alliance of America, more than 28 million people in the US have a significant hearing needs. Even with the high numbers of individuals needing some hearing improvement, only about 1 million hearing devices are sold a year.

What will personal hearing devices do for me?

Hearing devices will not restore normal hearing. The ear is just too complex to imitate. But, hearing devices can give your hearing the needed "boost" to increase awareness to sounds and their sources. This is extremely important because communication cannot happen if you are not even aware that someone is attempting to communicate with you. Hearing devices can make most speech available at a comfortable volume based on your specific hearing needs. Keep in mind that the brain is the processor of speech. It is not realistic to expect the listening devices to restore speech understanding as soon as you put them in your ears. It may take a few weeks to adjust and get your full benefit from this introduction of sound. Hearing devices keep the brain active in the processing of sounds.
Personal hearing devices have limitations. They will not "cut out" background noise. They can be adjusted to lessen the effects of background noise but a complete extraction of background noise is not possible. Many times background noise is other people's speech. One cannot get a device to "cut out" the exact same signal that it is made to amplify…speech.
A hearing device will "boost" awareness to sounds, including sounds you may not want to hear. For example, many people forget that footsteps have a sound, the refrigerator has a motor, and computers have fans. Hearing devices re-introduce these sounds to the ear, and the brain has to adjust to this addition. Eventually the brain should get to the point where it realizes what these sounds are, and that they can be ignored.

Choosing a personal hearing device.

There is not one particular hearing device that is the best on the market and will be appropriate for every person with listening needs. Selecting a device depends upon personal preference along with degree and shape of the useful hearing that remains. Almost every manufacturer of listening devices has moved towards a digital line with slightly different sound processing strategies, but the outcome is usually similar: a circuit that amplifies clearly.
There are three main decisions to make in choosing a solution to your hearing needs: size, circuit and service.

In purchasing the device itself, the main factor is the circuit. All digital hearing instruments are programmed in the office. The more 'entry level' device increases the volume of incoming sound with some minor in-office adjustments possible; sometimes makes loud sounds too loud and soft sounds not loud enough. The more advanced digital hearing instrument has technology which is the most flexible in adjustments based on your likes/dislikes or changes in hearing, automatic volume control, noise reduction circuits, treats soft sounds differently than loud sounds, brings you clarity instead of loudness, adaptive directional microphones and much more.

Two ears or one

If both of your ears need a boost then two hearing devices are usually recommended. This provides a more natural signal to the brain: normal hearing is with two ears! Equal hearing in both ears helps with understanding speech and locating the source of sound.

Why do hearing devices cost so much?

Hearing devices can be expensive, anywhere from about $750 -$3,000 each depending upon the size of the device, the circuitry and the service package. The price covers the research and development from the manufacturer; time spent with the professional during the fitting and adjustments; an insurance policy that specifies warranty along with loss and damage coverage; and the service to the unit. Hearing devices can last several years (5-7) if cared for appropriately. We strongly suggest taking advantage of a package with lifetime in-office service. Successful users of personal hearing devices usually wear their instruments every single day from the time they wake up until they get ready for bed at night.
